The Comics Corner - Week of 11/04/09

Ryan Porter joins the VGLosers team to hit us with his unique take on Amazing Spider-Man #610, Captain America Reborn #4, Sweet Tooth #3, and Ultimate Spider-Man #4! Come inside and see what made the top of the stack!

Sweet Tooth #3
5 Stars (out of 5)
It’s a rare and wonderful thing when a comic book not only affects you as you read it, but stays with you long after. Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth is that comic book. The subtlety and mood of the story are fantastic. Gus is so naïve and trusting that I am constantly scared to death for him. There were even times I realized I was actually holding my breath. While the dull colors creating a depressing mood for the world, I think it would be enhanced more if it were done in black and white. We are as new to this world as Gus is and that does make for a slow moving story. But with this title slow and steady is exactly what is needed.
Amazing Spider-Man #610
2 Stars
An unusually weak entry in what is normally a solid title. It was almost a chore to even read this issue. Jumping back and forth between the present and a Ben Reilly flashback it’s almost impossible to determine what’s going on. In the flashback it’s even harder to tell Ben Reilly and Damon Ryder. This ‘forgotten’ Clone saga tale was better left in the past and ignored. In the lone bright spot Spider-Man does punch out Screwball. Man, that chick is annoying.
Captain America Reborn #4
4 Stars
The story of the return of Steve Rodgers continues. Red Skull teaming up with Dr. Doom is never a good thing, unless you like hearing super villains banter back and forth, and I do. While egos clash in Latveria, Reed Richards and Hank Pym move closer to putting all the pieces together and figuring out just what happened to Captain America. An issue mostly devoted to progressing the story gets turned up to eleven with one of the best last pages I’ve seen in a long time.
Ultimate Spider-Man #4
5 Stars
What is it about Ultimate Spider-Man that makes this such a constantly reliable title? The answer to my rhetorical question is obviously Brian Michael Bendis. He’s been writing the title since it began and the re-launch has put new life back into the book with new villains, new heroes, and new relationships. From high school drama to high powered villains, Bendis keeps Peter in the familiar ‘how is Spidey going to get out of this one?’ position. The art by Lafuente continues to grow on me despite the super hairdo of Peter Parker and the way too round head of Spider-Man.
